About the Japanese on this page
Some Japanese is left here on purpose. **Source titles** are given as published, so you can find the original. **Addresses are shown in Japanese as well as romanised**, because Japanese is what works in a taxi or a map app. Shop names keep the Japanese alongside for the same reason. Everything else — hours, closing days, prices, seating, how to get there, and the articles — is in English, translated from the Japanese edition rather than machine-translated on the fly.
COUNTRIES
Monja by country
Web searches combining each country's name (in Japanese, English and the local language) with monjayaki / monja / もんじゃ / 文字燒 / 문자야키 / มอนจายากิ, then corroboration against the shop's own site or the official page of the development it sits in. We did not stop at Japanese-language searching.
Unlike okonomiyaki, takoyaki and ramen, monjayaki has barely moved abroad. In this survey we could confirm shops in only five countries or territories: Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and the United States. For the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Australia, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Canada, searching in English and in the local language did not reach a shop that names monja on its menu.
That does not mean it has stopped. On 7 August 2026, Moheji of Tsukishima opened its first shop in South Korea, in Seoul. Following One Bangkok, Japanese monja specialists are moving one by one into the centres of Asian cities.
Why it spreads slowly can only be estimated, but three reasons suggest themselves. 1) The customer has to cook it, so explaining how is expensive. 2) It never looks like a finished plate, so it does not sell in photographs. 3) It is a Tokyo-local food, and has had few chances to be introduced abroad as a regional dish.

What “could not confirm” means
We did not work exhaustively through each country's local-language review sites (Dianping, NAVER, Zomato and so on). "Could not confirm" does not mean "does not exist"; it means "this survey did not reach a primary source".

Moheji, a specialist brand from Tsukishima, has opened at One Bangkok. This is the clearest case we could confirm of a monja specialist opening abroad on its own. Don Don, a Japanese restaurant on Sukhumvit 39, also serves monja.

Taiwan 台湾
A shop carrying "Tsukishima" in its name has served monjayaki in Taipei's east district for more than twenty years. TEN-YA, opened in 2002, is described as Taiwan's first shop specialising in okonomiyaki, monjayaki and teppanyaki, and has produced local variants such as an "Italian rice monja" (its Taipei Main Station branch is confirmed closed). Outside Japan, this is where monja has taken root most.

On 7 August 2026 Moheji, a specialist brand from Tsukishima, opened its first shop in South Korea, in Jongno, Seoul. It happened while this database was being compiled, and shows that monja's move abroad is under way. There is also word of independent shops in Seoul listing 몬자야키 on the menu, but we could not confirm them from primary sources this time and have not included them.

Happa Restaurant, an izakaya in Gardena near Los Angeles, serves Tokyo-style monja cooked at the table. Not a specialist — one item on a menu. We could not confirm anything in New York or Honolulu. In English, monjayaki is generally introduced as a Japanese dish that is barely known outside Japan.

NOT CONFIRMED
15 countries where we could not confirm
Kept as part of the survey. Not “it does not exist”, but “this survey did not reach a primary source”.

|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong | 香港 | There are many Japanese restaurants serving okonomiyaki and teppanyaki, but in this survey we could not confirm from primary sources a shop that names monja on its menu. |
| China | 中国 | One personal blog records a shop in Shanghai called KURA, serving monjayaki and okonomiyaki, but we could not corroborate it against the shop's own information or map data, so it is not included. At the next update we will work through local sources such as Dianping. |
