JAEN

Monjayaki on an iron plate. A ring of chopped cabbage holds the batter poured into the middle, which has turned brown and is bubbling and steaming. The edges are beginning to catch, and a metal spatula lies beside it. Made with an image-generating AI; it does not show any particular shop's food.

About the Japanese on this page

Some Japanese is left here on purpose. **Source titles** are given as published, so you can find the original. **Addresses are shown in Japanese as well as romanised**, because Japanese is what works in a taxi or a map app. Shop names keep the Japanese alongside for the same reason. Everything else — hours, closing days, prices, seating, how to get there, and the articles — is in English, translated from the Japanese edition rather than machine-translated on the fly.

FINDING

Monja has not gone abroad

Okonomiyaki and takoyaki are everywhere. Monja is almost nowhere. Searching 20 countries and territories in English and the local language, we could confirm shops in only five: Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and the United States. Even so, it has not stopped. On 7 August 2026, Moheji of Tsukishima opened its first shop in South Korea, in Seoul.

THIS MONTH

This month

Chosen from what we could confirm moved in the past month: openings, closures, relocations, new formats. Not promotion — only things that actually happened.

  1. 01

    Tsukishima Monja Moheji Seoul

On 7 August 2026 the first shop in South Korea opened in Jongno, Seoul. It happened while this database was being built, and shows that monja's move abroad is going on right now. Opening hours and closing days are not yet confirmed from primary sources.

  2. 02

    Okonomiyaki Michi

A shop serving Oarai's tarashiyaki. A regional dish only a few shops can still make, and the first thing this database checks every month.

HOW WE WORK

What this database promises
