Why we made this
Because the most beautiful thing about a maiko is not visible in a photograph, and because the people who keep this culture alive deserve visitors who understand it.
01The problem this atlas answers
Search 'maiko' in English and you will find booking pages, makeover studios and a handful of good but unsourced guides. Search in Japanese and you will find the official sites of the kagai, rich and exact, but spread across many pages and never translated. Between the two lies the visitor who has seen a photograph, felt something, and would like to understand it before acting on it.
02How we work
Primary sources first: the Kyoto Traditional Musical Art Foundation, Kyoto City, each kagai's own site, each performance's official page. Every page shows the date it was checked. Where a detail is widely repeated but not confirmed by those sources, it is labelled 'commonly reported'. No text is copied from other sites; the visuals at launch are generated concept images, marked as such, and will be replaced by our own photographs after the field visit.
03Who
J-Catalyst is a small Japanese company that builds bilingual cultural media and connects Japanese culture and food with people abroad. Its founder and this site's editor, Masami Oginuma, dances as Fujima Kanremi and holds the shihan (teaching) rank of the Fujima school of nihon buyo, awarded within the school's own licensing system, as well as a teaching rank in calligraphy; she is a trained sushi chef and worked for years as a journalist at the Asahi Shimbun. The approach is the reporter's: go, watch, ask, write down the date.
04What comes next
A field visit to Kyoto in September 2026: a maiko experience booked as any visitor would book it, the five kagai walked, craftspeople met where they will receive us. The odori themselves fall in spring and autumn, so the October recitals will be the first performances we report on. The Field Notes will be updated, the visuals replaced, and only then will the experience comparison start to say which we recommend.
05Independence
No operator, theatre or studio has paid for a mention. There are no affiliate links or booking buttons at launch. When that changes, it will be said on the page where it changes.
MAIKO ATLAS visual manifest. All images are concept visuals generated with OpenAI image generation via Codex CLI (same image model as ChatGPT). None depicts a real, identifiable maiko or geiko. They are to be replaced progressively with real photographs from the September 2026 field visit. 'style' is prepended to every prompt. Cultural check: every image is reviewed after generation (see docs/IMAGES.md); images flagged by review are captioned as approximate and scheduled for replacement.
